The Healthier Hospitals Initiative (HHI) is a national campaign to implement a completely new approach to improving environmental health and sustainability in the health care sector. Eleven of the largest, most influential U.S. health systems, comprising over 475 hospitals with more than $20 billion in purchasing power, worked with Health Care Without Harm (HCWH), the Center for Health Design and Practice Greenhealth to create HHI as a guide for hospitals to reduce energy and waste, choose safer and less toxic products, and purchase and serve healthier foods. With these eleven sponsoring systems as anchors, the initiative will enroll at least 2,000 hospitals in 50 states and the District of Columbia over the next three years to implement sustainable operations, and will measure the impact on improved patient, worker and community health and reduced costs. As a comprehensive, sector-wide initiative, HHI is fully consistent with and builds upon the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Triple Aim – Better Health, Better Care and Lower Costs, and will institute frameworks and implementation tools that can be used by every healthcare facility in the nation, for no charge.

When two North Carolina nurses met, they knew they had several things in common. They were both passionate about nursing, had a knack for writing and were driven to inspire others to embrace lifelong learning. They later discovered they had something else in common—something they were not talking about. They had both suffered the ill effects of incivility in the healthcare workplace. Why weren't they talking about it? Because no one talks about it. It's healthcare's dirty little secret. No one wants to admit that a shameful culture of incivility infects most healthcare workplaces. Both Linda and Stacey found out the hard way that working in an atmosphere that breeds incivility leaves healthcare workers feeling exhausted, hopeless and dissatisfied . . . but that's not the worst part. Incivility in the healthcare workplace also leads to medical errors, poor patient satisfaction, higher employee turnover and higher healthcare costs for consumers. Linda H. Leekley BS, RN began her nursing career in the oncology department at Duke University Medical Center. After experience in acute care, home health, clinical education and healthcare writing, she founded the healthcare publishing company, In the Know, in 1998. Linda believes that civility and lifelong learning are the keys to both personal and professional success. She lives in Durham, North Carolina--the “City of Medicine.” Stacey L. Turnure, RN came into nursing as a second career. It was her mother's diagnosis and eventual death from cancer that inspired the career change. She has worked in oncology, neurology, medical-surgical and pediatrics. Now, a nurse educator, healthcare education writer and double-time mom to twin boys, Stacey looks forward to inspiring others to follow their dreams, use their voices and make positive changes where change is so desperately needed.

Michael Pergrem, also known as Coach Perg, is passionate about helping nurses lead the most fulfilling lives possible. In his own words: “I realized there is a great need for nurses to find their true path, either within their careers, or if desired, in pursuing an alternate calling. I came to realize I could better serve those I had cared for by caring for those that serve them (my fellow nurses). Helping nurses avoid or recover from burn-out and rediscover their passion in nursing could only serve to enhance their effectiveness in providing care to those that need them, both at the bedside and at home. "My mission is to help those other nurses who, like me, have discovered a burning desire to move on, in a different direction, be that a different field in nursing, or a different field altogether. “In either case to find their path that leads to: Realizing the boundless possibilities that are achievable, self empowerment, and joy. These are the rewards given to those of us who serve our true calling with passion.” We will spend this episode of RN.FM Radio exploring Coach Perg's approach to nursing burnout, nurse wellnes, nurse coaching, and his signature coaching methodology known as "Pergology". Join us for an insightful episode of RN.FM Radio with special guest Coach Perg!

My Mobile Medicine was started in 2008 by Jody Hoppis, a Nurse Practitioner who wanted to bring a more personal, adaptable form of Family Practice Medicine to patients in Whatcom County, WA. With everything she needs in a simple bike trailer, Jody has been caring for her patients over the past 2 years, bringing them quality care and medical treatment that comes from an experienced professional. Because of her unique method of care, she is able to spend 45 to 60 minutes with each patient, much more than the average 10 to 20 given in a clinic setting. Jody's personal goal is to merge the best of both Western and Eastern medicines, utilizing concepts from each to model complete care. Her highest priority is for each of her patients to feel listened to and well-cared for - a priority that is evident by the happiness and satisfaction of her current patients. Mobile Medicine also offers a less complex approach to communication. Jody makes it a priority to save her patients' time by doing the traveling for them, ensuring that people miss as few work hours as possible.
