With all of the recent natural disasters happening all over the world it really gets us thinking about what we would do as a nurses during an event like this. Something like this can impact us on a smaller scale like a short-term power outage, or can occur from a much larger event like hurricane Irma or the earthquakes in Mexico that has a more extensive wake of problems.

Are you prepared?

What are the dangers, violence, and injuries faced by nurses every day? The most disturbing story we've heard in a long time is that of a nurse who was held hostage, attacked, and repeatedly raped by a patient who was an inmate receiving medical care. The inmate was eventually killed in the standoff, and support for this nurse has been pouring in from around the country.

Tune in to find out, and be sure to check out the latest segment of #stumpsean.

Dr. Larry Berkelhammer has lived with several chronic medical conditions since childhood. For decades he endured the frustration of not knowing the causes of his physical problems. Then, well into adulthood, he was diagnosed with two autoimmune diseases and a primary immunodeficiency disease. At the same time, he was told there were no known cures for any of them and that treatment for some would make others worse.

In Your Own Hands: New Hope for People with Chronic Medical Conditions (Empowered Patient Coalition Press, Jan. 2014, 98-0991243709) serves as a guide to help those living with chronic illness, as well as their caregivers, learn to live with conscious intention to maximize health and wellbeing. Larry teaches a class based on his new book at The College of Marin and anyone is invited him to learn about participating. Larry also blogs for PsychCentral.com, with 3.7 million monthly views.

Enid Shomer won the Iowa Short Fiction Award for her first collection of stories, "Imaginary Men", and the Florida Book Awards Gold Medal for her second, "Tourist Season". She is also the author of four books of poetry. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, The Paris Review, and many other publications. "The Twelve Rooms of the Nile" (Simon & Schuster, 2012), is her first novel.

"The Twelve Rooms of the Nile" is a fascinating account of the fictional (and intellectually and emotionally intense) meeting in Egypt of a young Florence Nightingale and the French writer Gustave Flaubert. Shomer conducted extensive research about the concurrent Egyptian travels of Nightingale and Flaubert, and she has great insight into the early years of Nightingale's life.

This is an edifying and exciting interview in which the myth and story of Florence Nightingale plays a central role. In 2013, Shomer received the Lifetime Achievement Award in Writing from the Florida Humanities Council. The author lives in Tampa, Florida.

The Healthier Hospitals Initiative (HHI) is a national campaign to implement a completely new approach to improving environmental health and sustainability in the health care sector. Eleven of the largest, most influential U.S. health systems, comprising over 475 hospitals with more than $20 billion in purchasing power, worked with Health Care Without Harm (HCWH), the Center for Health Design and Practice Greenhealth to create HHI as a guide for hospitals to reduce energy and waste, choose safer and less toxic products, and purchase and serve healthier foods. With these eleven sponsoring systems as anchors, the initiative will enroll at least 2,000 hospitals in 50 states and the District of Columbia over the next three years to implement sustainable operations, and will measure the impact on improved patient, worker and community health and reduced costs. As a comprehensive, sector-wide initiative, HHI is fully consistent with and builds upon the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Triple Aim – Better Health, Better Care and Lower Costs, and will institute frameworks and implementation tools that can be used by every healthcare facility in the nation, for no charge.

When two North Carolina nurses met, they knew they had several things in common. They were both passionate about nursing, had a knack for writing and were driven to inspire others to embrace lifelong learning. They later discovered they had something else in common—something they were not talking about. They had both suffered the ill effects of incivility in the healthcare workplace. Why weren't they talking about it? Because no one talks about it. It's healthcare's dirty little secret. No one wants to admit that a shameful culture of incivility infects most healthcare workplaces. Both Linda and Stacey found out the hard way that working in an atmosphere that breeds incivility leaves healthcare workers feeling exhausted, hopeless and dissatisfied . . . but that's not the worst part. Incivility in the healthcare workplace also leads to medical errors, poor patient satisfaction, higher employee turnover and higher healthcare costs for consumers. Linda H. Leekley BS, RN began her nursing career in the oncology department at Duke University Medical Center. After experience in acute care, home health, clinical education and healthcare writing, she founded the healthcare publishing company, In the Know, in 1998. Linda believes that civility and lifelong learning are the keys to both personal and professional success. She lives in Durham, North Carolina--the “City of Medicine.” Stacey L. Turnure, RN came into nursing as a second career. It was her mother's diagnosis and eventual death from cancer that inspired the career change. She has worked in oncology, neurology, medical-surgical and pediatrics. Now, a nurse educator, healthcare education writer and double-time mom to twin boys, Stacey looks forward to inspiring others to follow their dreams, use their voices and make positive changes where change is so desperately needed.

Michael Pergrem, also known as Coach Perg, is passionate about helping nurses lead the most fulfilling lives possible. In his own words: “I realized there is a great need for nurses to find their true path, either within their careers, or if desired, in pursuing an alternate calling. I came to realize I could better serve those I had cared for by caring for those that serve them (my fellow nurses). Helping nurses avoid or recover from burn-out and rediscover their passion in nursing could only serve to enhance their effectiveness in providing care to those that need them, both at the bedside and at home. "My mission is to help those other nurses who, like me, have discovered a burning desire to move on, in a different direction, be that a different field in nursing, or a different field altogether. “In either case to find their path that leads to: Realizing the boundless possibilities that are achievable, self empowerment, and joy. These are the rewards given to those of us who serve our true calling with passion.” We will spend this episode of RN.FM Radio exploring Coach Perg's approach to nursing burnout, nurse wellnes, nurse coaching, and his signature coaching methodology known as "Pergology". Join us for an insightful episode of RN.FM Radio with special guest Coach Perg!
